How We Handle Your Files
Every tool on Edit PDF Free declares its processing mode in our central registry (`local` or `server`) and displays a badge directly above the file drop zone.
1. Local Tools (`processing: "local"`)
Tools labeled Processed on your device execute entirely inside your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly inside a dedicated Web Worker. Your PDF file bytes and image bytes are never transmitted over the network.
2. How to Verify Zero Uploads in Browser DevTools
- Open any local tool page on Edit PDF Free.
- Open your browser Developer Tools (`F12` or `Cmd+Option+I` on Mac) and select the Network tab.
- Click the Clear button in the Network tab, then drop your PDF file into the workbench.
- Inspect the network log: zero requests contain your file bytes. You can also turn off Wi-Fi after loading the page and complete the job offline.
3. Server Tools (`processing: "server"`) & Anonymous Aggregate Metrics
If a tool requires server-side processing (such as AI document question answering, when enabled), it displays an explicit yellow badge before you select a file. For AI tools, text is extracted on your device and only the text chunks are sent to the server and discarded after the response. Any temporary server objects are deleted within 1 hour (with a 1-day storage lifecycle backstop).
To measure tool reliability and compression ratios, completed jobs emit an anonymous `onJobComplete` event containing only `{ tool, inputBytesBucket, outputBytesBucket, pages, ms }` (tool slug, coarse size buckets, page count, and duration in milliseconds). File names, document text, and file contents are never included.
