What Is a PDF File?

A PDF (Portable Document Format) is an open international standard file format (ISO 32000) designed to display documents with identical fonts, page dimensions, images, and vector graphics regardless of which computer, phone, browser, or printer opens the file. You can open and inspect any PDF directly in your browser without uploading it using our free local PDF Reader or annotate and sign pages on the Edit PDF Free homepage editor.

Why PDF Files Look the Same Everywhere

Word processor files and HTML pages reflow depending on installed system fonts, screen width, and printer drivers. A PDF file embeds the exact coordinate positions of every character, vector path, raster image, and font subset inside a self-contained binary structure with a cross-reference table (xref).

  • Fixed page geometry: Each page defines an explicit MediaBox and CropBox measured in points (1/72 of an inch).
  • Interactive AcroForms: PDFs can contain fillable text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, and dropdown menus for tax and legal forms.
  • Annotations and redactions: Pages support layered markup annotations or permanent content-stream removal for true redaction.
